Chapter 05

Qualitative pattern synthesis

Synthesis is the craft of turning scattered field notes into defensible themes — without dressing them as census data. gretpryt’s approach is deliberate, slow, and challenge-heavy.

Affinity clusters of interview quotes on kraft paper

01

Extract

Pull scenes, phrases, and stalls — not summaries.

02

Cluster

Group by mechanism, not by product feature wishlist.

03

Challenge

Claude rounds try to break weak themes before they ship.

Extraction that preserves texture

Teams often rewrite notes into corporate prose too early. gretpryt keeps quote cards with role tags from decision-maker mapping and stage tags from the journey. Texture is what later positioning will need.

Cluster by mechanism

Feature requests cluster poorly because every buyer can invent a feature. Mechanisms — how confidence forms, how risk is socialized, how vendors get compared — reveal patterns that survive product changes. Link clusters back to purchase decision friction types so language stays precise.

Claude challenge rounds

A claude round is a timed hostile review. For each theme, a teammate argues the opposite using counterexamples from the same corpus. Themes that survive become candidates for positioning synthesis. Themes that die return to fieldwork via interview protocols or touchpoint observation.

What you refuse to claim

gretpryt refuses: population percentages from tiny qualitative sets, ROI promises, and “the market wants” statements when only one segment spoke. The glossary defines pattern versus prevalence for shared vocabulary.
